Dr Engela attended the EFFORT meeting in June 2011, Copenhagen ,Denmark where the European surgeons present their perspective on what is good and what is not. This is an interesting meeting that deals with most aspects of Orthopaedics. A very well organized meeting with many interesting topics.

Dr Engela attended the ISAKOS meeting in Brazil, May 2011. The latest research in biological management of joint muscle and tendon injuries were discussed at a special symposium. The rest of the meeting was very informative with aspects of arthroscopic hip and knee surgery dis cussed and demonstrated.

Dr Engela demonstrated the latest techniques in Total Hip Replacement utilizing cementless implants to visiting surgeons from Austria at Constantiaberg Mediclinic on Monday 16 November 2009.

On Saturday 28 November 2009 Dr Engela lectured at Vincent Pallotti Hospital on Chronic Wrist pain at a Hand Therapist Symposium.

Computer assisted Total knee replacement surgery improves the accuracy of the operation. This can improve the performance of the knee and reduce the rehabilitation time due to the fact that the ligament balancing is done in a more controlled manner. Dr Engela has been performing computer assisted surgery for more than a year at Constantiaberg Clinic, while Dr Martin utilised it extensively during the course of his super-specialist fellowship training.

Cape Hip and Knee Surgery - Future Plans

Dr's Engela and Martin envision expansion of the current spectrum of services provided by the Cape Hip and Knee Surgery.

Hip and Knee arthritis is a problem which affects many people in the less affluent communities in South Africa. Unfortunately the state healthcare system has almost completely failed these people (closed waiting lists, no theatre time and a prohibitively low implant budget as well as constant and devastating staff cuts) and they continue to suffer with disability and pain.

It therefore falls to the private healthcare sector to attempt to solve this problem. We are setting up an all-comers service which we will actively promote to the first-contact practitioners (GP's, day hospitals) as soon as it becomes logistically viable.

The service will consist of a multi-center clinic (Constantiaberg Mediclinic, False Bay Hospital) where patients will be examined and have radiographs taken. We will offer surgery to the patients who require it and assist them with medical aid issues. It will further allow us to establish a waiting list of non medical aid patients. This will be a solid first step towards securing increased funding from the Department of Health in conjunction with corporate donations. Should we succeed with this, these patients would then recieve their arthroplasty surgery at state hospitals at very limited cost to them.

Sports Injury Clinic

Dr's Engela and Martin are excited to be involved in setting up the planned Sports Injury Clinic at Constantiaberg Mediclinic. Given our involvement at the Sports Science Institute at Newlands, we are confident that the establishment of this unit will enable us to continue to provide excellent care to sportspeople of all levels.
